The "Monarch" fountain pen is a large, cigar shaped, clipless ebonite fountain pen. It has been covered in 4 layers of black base urushi lacquer (wet sanded with #1000 grid sandpaper after each application and curing). Small rectangular pieces of Raden (mother of pearl - prism abalone) are applicated throughout the pen, creating a irregular pattern. The next 3 layers where done with red urushi. In the next step 23,5k powdergold has been applicated onto the still sticky red lacquer, gilding the entire pen. Further layers in clear urushi where painted on and cured. Once the urushi was completey cured, the pen was wet sanded until the red urushi became visible in spots under the gilding. For the finishing kijo-mi urushi got applicated on the pen and wiped off with filtering paper. After curing for additional 24hrs, the pen got polished and once again kijo-mi urushi got applicated and wiped off. After a final curing period the lacquer was burnished and polished to a glasslike shine. Length of the production process: 2,5 months.
